Lately, I’ve seen posts about the
outcomes of the election and Obama’s future plans for the U.S. I just wanted to
throw out a topic that would relate most to us seniors. As senior year winds
down to the day we graduate, college applications are already sent in and most
of us are waiting to get accepted into a college. Once accepted into our
desired college a bundle of mixed emotions consumes us. But then, reality kicks
in and we have to start realizing that college isn’t cheap especially during
times like this where the economy isn’t so great. The question here is, how
must one pay for an overly-priced higher education?
Attending college and furthering
your education is a must during these times of struggle and hardship. It also
is the starting path for our future. Prices for everything are increasingly rising
and that also includes college tuitions. According to the article “Obama’s
college tuition plans face tough fight,” the average tuition for a community
college has raised 40% ($3,122 a year) and 68% for universities ($7,692 a
year). With the increasing tuition prices to attend any type of college it is
also a threshold for the students themselves paying off the loans they have
borrowed to attend that school. President Obama plans on cutting the increasing
values for college tuitions in the next decade. How will he do it?
You would think that trying to
lower college funds would be an easy thing to do, right? Well, college tuitions
have risen not only because of the recession of the economy but because of the
ever growing demand of education in the workforce today, according to an
article in TIME magazine: http://business.time.com/2010/09/13/6-questions-about-college-so-where-does-the-money-spent-on-tuition-and-fees-really-go/. Most
education experts say that Obama’s plans to lower these tuition costs are
highly doubtful and it isn’t realistic. According to the article “Obama’s
college tuition plans face tough times,” one of Obama’s officials wants to
encourage states to start up a new grant program that will help cut costs. This
is a very controversial idea because there are programs that are helping
students already pay for their education and if the President wants to lower
costs then the students can’t use those loans or grants given to them.
Basically it’s like saying you can have money but you can’t use your money.
Personally, I would love to have
college tuition costs lowered but in reality I know it won’t happen. The cost
of a higher education was not as stressed as it is now just because in today’s
time a higher education is needed to progress yourself to a higher level in
your respective field. I agree with the educational experts that this plan the
President has to lower educational costs is unrealistic. How is a school going
to lower their costs? All the money that a student pays to go to college is to
provide for their school athletic teams and to improve their programs. Now, I
want to know what you guys think about Obama’s plan on lowering college costs.
Do you think this is a possible idea? If not, how else do you think we can
lower the cost of education?

I agree with you Lithda, seeing college tuition costs go down would be great, and I think it is safe to say that just about everyone would benefit from something like this happening. I do feel that nothing like this will ever happen and tuition costs will continue to rise.
ReplyDeleteI do however think that there is one plus side to having expensive tuition costs, and that is, that becuase of the higher costs, less people will go to college than if the cost is much lower, makikng there less people in college, meaning more one on one time with professors, and less competiion for a job when you come out of school.
All in all I would like to see tuition costs go down, but I think we all know that it is not going to happen.
College tuition costs will continue to rise, no doubt about it. Unfortunately, I don't think there is much to be done about this. I mean, what can anyone really do? Especially when our country is in so much debt and the economy is suffering, universities and colleges will continue to increase their tuition costs to keep up with the times and the worth of the dollar. It is pretty important for as many people to go to college as possible, to obtain a strong education and prepare themselves for a future career, so the fact that tuition is so expensive really puts the less fortunate in a pickle. It's scary for us to think about, too, because this will be our lives in only seven or eight months.
ReplyDeleteI agree that we need to do something with the cost of college because it is what has put a lot of people into tremendous debt. The cost of college has risen over 400% since the 1980's which is the worst inflation rate for anything. I believe that it would be good to add more scholarships and grants but it may put the country's economy into even more debt.
ReplyDeleteI think that college costs far too much, as all of us do, but what is really bad is the fact that there's nothing anyone can do about it legally. The reason that the government hasn't taken action yet is because we are in a capitalist kind of economy and government, so there's nothing the government can force the colleges to do about their costs. So the universities can continue to charge outrageous amounts of money for an education. Unfortunately it is what it is and there's nothing much anyone can do about it.
ReplyDeleteI agree Lithda. College costs way too much. The worst part is that People wont be able to bring the costs down by doing anything except maybe a boycott, and I don't see that happening. Not with the job market being so competitive and the types of jobs in demand today. There are options like scholarships or the GI bill but not everyone can get these. So what happens to the average Joe who wants to pursue a higher education? he'll have to work most of his life to pay off what could be an amount of money equivalent to what some one would pay for a house.
ReplyDeleteI definitely agree Lithda.
ReplyDeleteI also with that college tuition costs would lower but you're right, it's not likely that it will happen. Because of the fact that we do have to pay for activities and books and computers, and also the professors it's a low chance to be able to lower these costs. The question I face is how can Obama lower these costs for us graduating students so that we can afford an education. Maybe people could donate to colleges or the government could pay for fees more rather than us having to pay full prices. I also think it's a good idea for students to really look into scholarship options because there are a lot out there and it will help us students be able to pay for college.

It would be nice to lower the college cost but just like the experts said it's highly unrealistic. I think that the help the government provides is a great thing and the system of education is good. However, in the end of the day college students would be drowning in debts that they owe the government. It's crazy to think how much expenses we, students, have ones we go to college. In high school we don't really pay that much but ones we go to college the amount of money we have to spend is greater. Obama's plan is impossible, especially, how the economy of the country is today. Maybe in the future the plan might possible and put to action. Who knows?
