Role of Women’s Leadership in the World

By: Maddie O.

Women’s influence in the world’s society has changed over the centuries, around the world. At first, the role of a woman was to be a wife, and raise a family. Over time women have gained political influences to help brighten their countries’ future.
Around the world women have held positions of power. Various important countries that have had great successful women as leaders are Angola, Bahamas, Canada, Costa Rica, Egypt, France, Great Britain, Haiti, Italy, Pakistan, Russia, Spain, Trinidad and Tobago, Turkey, and Ukraine. Two past female rulers that everyone would recognize would be Queen Cleopatra VII from Ancient Egypt, and Queen Elizabeth the first from England. Two examples of political women from today would Margaret Thatcher and Queen Elizabeth the second, who are both from Great Britain. Here is a table of most of the women that have had power throughout the world in the past and in the present.

Women in other countries have inspired the American woman to hold a position of authority.  For example, Jeannette Rankin was the first woman to be elected for a House of Representative seat so she became a part of the 65th Congress in 1916. In 1932, is when Hattie Wyatt Caraway was the first woman to be elected into the Senate, unlike Rebecca Latimer Felton, she got her Senate seat by filling the vacancy since the previous Senator died. Chase Smith was the first woman to be nominated for presidency by the Republican Convention in 1964. Our first African-American woman was elected to the House of Representatives in 1968 her name was Shirley Chisholm; she also was a part of founding the National Organization for Women. Ms. Chisholm was also the first woman to run for presidency in 1972. In more recent years Hillary Clinton was the first “First Lady” to be elected into the Senate in 2000. In hopes of becoming the first female president she ran in the 2008 election, but lost to Obama in the primaries. With Hillary Clinton on the Democratic side of the political spectrum; John McCain announced his vice president candidate as Sarah Palin, the governor of Alaska. As the candidate for Vice Presidency, she spoke and electrified the crowd at the Republican National Convention on Sept. 4, 2008. She delivered sharp comments about her critics and opponents that were against her “hockey mom” title. In the US House of Representative some examples are Nancy Pelosi who is now the Speaker of the House of Representatives, and Jamie Herrera Beutler. Two female Senators are Hillary Clinton and Susan Collins.

  1. All I have to say is, THANK GOODNESS! This world is in need of more female leaders. I don't know why it took the United States so long to figure out that having a woman in power was a good thing, ancient Egypt had many female leaders, and I would say they did pretty well for themselves. It is nice to see women taking a stand for their rights, and taking part in our government. No more shall a man tell me that the only thing I am good for is having babies!

  2. Women's rights have definitely come a long way. To me, it's never made sense why women had almost no role in society. I guess it's just always been traditional for men to take the leadership role throughout time in the United States, but as our country is evolving, I think it is necessary to get women into much larger roles as they have different viewpoints to help America out as a whole. I think men can control themselves better and they are better leaders in general, but to have women on board and increasing their rights today, it's interesting to see where they may end up.

    1. Thank you Austin, I believe that you are absolutely correct we do need a balance of men and women in politics, because we women due tend to go with our minds and emotions, where as men have a more logical approach to the way they look at things.

    2. Maddie... that's so completely sexist. Additionally, it's untrue. Women are just as capable of rational thought and logical reasoning as men are, and men are just as capable of emotion as women are. I can't speak for everyone, but I myself (along with most other women) definitely think with my mind and not my lady bits.

  3. It's crazy to think about how other countries have had female leaders for all this time, but our country has just started this not too long ago. Just look at how much women are achieving now that they could never have achieved even sixty years ago. They have careers, they work hard, and they have a lot of power in our country. I think it is only the beginning, and the power that girls have in our country will be even greater in the near future.

  4. I agree with others that it's crazy that although our country is considered revolutionary and in some aspects ahead of its time, we always have fallen short in terms of womans rights. As Maddie showed other countries have power to woman far before we even began thinking about it. Clearly the power a woman holds has gone a long way but I think it can go even further. I look forward to seeing a female president and watching as woman gain more political power as the years go on.

  5. Women's rights have drastically been upgraded from the past for the benefits of women. It just seems that men are the dominant ones of the sex even though both should be treated equally. However, women need to be involved in this just as much as men because they contribute just as much. Both have their own contributions and it'd be better to have more diversity.

  6. It is a good change that the role of women has become more equal to that of men. The diversity of ideas will help as we move forward. Although the equality of men and women is very important I don’t think that women should get better opportunities just for being a girl. It should be only based on the ability to complete the job and gender should be not a factor at all.

  7. I'm so glad that women are able to have the same rights as everyone else and your information is interesting. I don't agree that women should get better opportunities but because they're women. I believe that everyone should be equal no matter their gender or race but no one should be given an upper hand. People, women included, should be judged on their own personal assests, not their gender.
