Tobacco

By: Evan B.

Like many of you I believe that the manufactre and distribution of tobacco related products should not be illegal due to many factors. First off, the choice to inhale the crude cancerous chemicals that are in a cigarattes are purely based on that person and their choice to do so. If one wants to do so they shouldn't be stopped from it because that is their life style choice and ultimatly no one or nothing should stop that other than themselves. Second, tobacco manufactoring and distribution brings in alot of work for the citizens in this country which then betters the employment rate which then will lower the deficit in our country. This is due to the fact that acquiring all of these jobs would bring money to the citizens as well as the taxation of the product in general bringing in money to the government and being 16 trillion in debt to china and other nations currently, wouldn’t that only make sense we use this strategy especially in the economic crisis we are in (or heading to).
When analyzing this topic, to fully be able to make an opinion on tobacco’s legality one must both the economic values it brings but not forget the damage it causes to nations health as well. It is a fact the use of tobacco can cause numerous types of cancer as well as lungs and heart diseases. Although this would be “playing the lesser of the two evils” there is no good way for our nation to climb its way out of the whole we dug ourselves in. By millions of Americans using these dangerous products, another factor of our economy benefits as well, the healthcare. As millions begin to become sick their money then gets put into our healthcare system, which results in our government obtaining more money from us. This although might sound bad in one point of view, it is good for our overall country’s economy to thrive.
So look at tobacco in general. It is all about money, but is in the constitution that one must buy a pack a day and become addicted? No, that is why the Surgeon General’s warning is on the side of the pack, because people need to take control of their own health. They do that by not purchasing the governments “cancer sticks”. Just because the option is on the table doesn’t mean you need to take it or (buy it).

  1. I think that tobacco products should be legal but i think that there should be a limit on how much someone could have. Some people are just unable to decide how much they can handle and how to be healthy so sometimes the government needs to step in. I feel like if they stepped in here and set up a limit on how much tobacco you were able to purchase then more people would be healthy and be able to get their lives back on track and become less addicted.

  2. I believe that the sale of tobacco products should remain legal, even though it is harmful to our health. It is important to keep the laws around tobacco sales in place, such as the 18 years of age law, but I agree that it should not be outlawed. And as much as we would like to try to regulate how much can be bought in a certain time period, I don't think it would work. People would only find a way around it.
