An arm and a leg but, don’t take my “Arms”

By: Robert Blask

The nation is caught with their head spinning on a recent political debate on federal Gun Laws and new restrictions. Gun control supporters joined Governor O’Malley Friday in calling for new regulations. The Maryland Firearms Safety Act requires licensing, training and fingerprinting in order to legally own a gun in the state. The governor’s bill also bans assault-style weapons and magazine clips with more than 10 rounds. On Jan. 16, 2012, President Obama held a press conference to announce his plan for changing the face of gun control in this country. Among his suggested initiatives are universal background checks for gun sales, the reinstatement and strengthening of the assault weapons ban, limiting ammunition magazines to a 10-round capacity, providing schools with resource officers and counselors, putting more police officers on the streets, establishing stronger punishments for gun trafficking, and offering more comprehensive insurance coverage for mental health.
Senate Majority Leader EJ Pipkin said “the governor’s proposals do not address gun crime.”

above shows how that even by taking the guns out of the hands or respected law abiding citizens it does not stop how how criminals will get possession of the guns.

this link below is a 2 hour link although you don't have to watch the whole thing, it is recommended that you scan through and see what representatives have to say.

More than 1,300 people signed up to raise their objections last week in a House joint committee hearing Friday. They returned to Annapolis Tuesday to testify for and against 23 gun bills offered by House Delegates related to firearms possession and
regulation.
while many will argue that guns are dangerous and are resulting in mass casualties and devastation like:
March 8, 2012—Two people were killed and seven wounded at a psychiatric hospital in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, when a gunman entered the hospital with two semiautomatic handguns and began firing.
March 31, 2012—A gunman opened fire on a crowd of mourners at a North Miami, Florida, funeral home, killing two people and injuring 12 others.
April 2, 2012—A 43-year-old former student at Oikos University in Oakland, California, walked into his former school and killed seven people, “execution-style.” Three people were wounded.
April 6, 2012—Two men went on a deadly shooting spree in Tulsa, Oklahoma, shooting black men at random in an apparently racially motivated attack. Three men died and two were wounded.
May 29, 2012—A man in Seattle, Washington, opened fire in a coffee shop and killed five people and then himself.

While all these devastating. Guns are not the reason that they were killed. and getting rid of guns because we have police is like getting rid of fire extinguishers because we have firefighters.
in 1791 the constitution states "A well regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed.  taking our right to arm not only weakens our national defense but makes us more of a prime target to terrorism due to the lack of defense. While we may have the worlds leading military, that did not stop chinese leader Xi Jinping from attacking our defenses from the fear of our military power but of the art of war that “Behind every blade of grass hides a man with gun. -Sun Tzu it was to our nation’s best interest and to our national defense that our enemies did not know who had the guns just that everyone had one.

people that are saying yes to this law are saying that:

1.  Most violent crimes are committed with guns; thus, restricting gun ownership will likely reduce the number of such crimes.
2.  Lunatics, bullied school kids, disgruntled workers, and others can inflict mass casualties with guns that otherwise wouldn't be possible.
3.  A crime victim who has a gun may be in more danger than an unarmed person since the criminal may kill in perceived self-defense.
4.  Suicides and crimes of passion are higher with gun availability, as it's much easier to act immediately on your impulses when a gun is
and people who are saying no to this bill say:
1.  Criminals will always find a way to obtain their guns, leaving law-abiding citizens without any weapons to use in defense.
2.  Crimes are often prevented by the deterrent effect of the possibility of victim gun possession.
3.  The 2nd Amendment to the Constitution protects the individual's right to gun ownership.
4.  Woman and weaker individuals may have no means of self-defense from rape or other crimes, especially in the inner city.

Both sides make a pretty good claim and show that, Ultimately it is not a good idea to take the arms out of the hands of our citizens. we are preaching to the wrong people because most people who own a firearm are law abiding so punishing them all would remain mute. Being a life member and a big supporter of the NRA I know that this will not go lightly through the eyes of the people.

  1. This is a good article because it shows all the different points from each side. Since both sides have a bunch of really good points it makes it very hard for me to pick a side completely. I think that something needs to be done in order to make guns harder to get, but they don't need to be removed completely from the public.

  2. I think Beau did a great job showing the pros and cons of banishing guns. He included many facts and enough information for anyone to argue either side. However, he concluded that taking away guns from the American people is overall a bad idea and I can’t help but agree. Bringing up the fact the government would be punishing law abiding citizens; that women, like I, would have a lesser chance of successful self-defense; and that taking away guns will not prevent angry people from committing angry crimes.

  3. Great job on showing both sides of the argument. When I think of gun control I don't really think of more laws, instead people should just stop killing each other. As simple as that sounds, that is the easiest solution to the entire gun control problem. Like the article says if you tighten the laws of guns criminals would still find a way to obtain guns. You could argue all day about the pros and cons of gun control but it comes down to the person behind the gun. I think that it is some what human nature to want to have power and hurt fellow humans and if you take away guns, people would just invent different ways to hurt people.

  4. Taking away gun from citizens is just a bad idea. With all that information you showed us you can tell that most mass murders are using guns that are not registered. The people that do the mass murders also have bad pasts and they couldn’t even get a gun now because of a background check that was just installed. So we should be able to keep our guns.

  5. I don't think we should take away guns from people. If we arm our citizens then when there is one crazy person who tries to shoot up a place everyone else will have all their guns pointing right at that person. Even though you do show pros of taking away guns I think it would be a really bad idea and would only make our citizens more vulnerable to attacks like we have been seeing lately.

  6. Robert,

I really like how you went about this... The article provides facts and backup for both sides of the argument and how it will actually effect the people. Taking guns away from the people would be a bad thing because then, when someone illegally owns a gun and decides to go shoot some people, the innocent ones wouldn't have the capability to stop that from happening when they otherwise would be able to. Again though, a background check and fingerprint is a good start, it will lower the number of mass shootings, but will never stop them. Overall though, great article Robert!!

  7. I don't think we should take guns away from the people. Like you mentioned in your blog, bad people are still going to find a way to get their hands on guns, whether legally or illegally. Taking away guns will leave the normal law abiding citizen vulnerable because the ones who want to cause harm now know that the good people will not have guns to stop them. I also don't think that the government should be able to control what guns we can and cannot have, or to make it such a hassle to get a gun. I understand checking to see if someone has a criminal record and making sure that they are trained to handle the gun properly, but they shouldn’t do much more than that.

  8. I also believe that we shouldn't take guns away from people because they do provide safety. They can help protect families from dangerous situations and even thought law enforcement does a lot and uses them in the right way, they can still take long to get where ever the threat is. For example there is a school in a rural city in Texas where every teacher owns a gun and holds it in their desk because the nearest law enforcement is a minimum of ten minutes away! So if anything would happen they would be able to protect themselves. Also I like how you say that we won't be able to stop guns fully because people are still going to get them illegally. If they really want a gun they'll find a way to get it.
