U.S. Poverty

By: TJ W.

A controversial topic in the U.S. right now is poverty. A major factor in the poverty percentage of 15.1% recorded in 2011 is that many U.S. citizens are unemployed. Many people say that it isn’t something to worry about because it is their fault for being poor. What people fail to understand is that the lower the poverty level, the better our country is as a whole. American citizens that are poor are either born into it, or they have made mistakes that have gotten them there. Everyone deserves a second chance in life, and if we can help them get out of poverty to create a better place and a more successful country, then let’s take action.
In 2011 the unemployment rate of America stood at a staggering 8.9 percent. The national rate for food insecurity has risen to almost 15 percent within the last two years. If we keep doing nothing about this situation, the poor are only going to get poorer, and the wealthy are going to keep getting wealthier if they don’t start slipping. American citizens that are born into poverty do not have a say in any of this. They do not have the money to attend schools, they can’t afford clothes, they cannot shower, and most importantly they live day to day because they don’t know if they will have food on the table every night. Most students that are associated with poverty that have the luxury of attending school, have to miss many days because they are required to work whenever they can to help their family. As a result from little to no school, these young American children suffer from developmental delays or learning disabilities. The disturbing thing about the effect of poverty on children is that they are starting their lives in a bad environment. An American child should be born into a world of endless opportunities, but the second that they are born into a poor family, many of those opportunities slip away. This is why we need to help the poor, who knows what some of these kids can turn out to be when they have the right education, and they don’t have to worry about living day to day.

The first step in reducing this country wide hunger (which is a large problem in poor homes) is by supplying free and reduced priced meals to millions of students that live in a low-income household. This will allow the students to put all of their other thoughts aside and just focus on schoolwork. People across the nation are donating to the clean water crisis. The second leading cause of death in young adults is from bad drinking water. With a donation, this foundation will donate clean drinking water to the less fortunate. People are also taking action in medical care, by going to rural places in the country where citizens can’t afford medical aid and they provide it to them free of charge.
